Irish: Tá Daid/Daidí ar an duine is sine sa teaghlach.
English: Dad/Daddy is the oldest person in the family.
Notes: Irish like English uses the Welsh words for father and mother as affectionate terms for parents.

Irish: Tá ceann catach ar Mhamaí.
English: Mammy has curly hair.
Notes: Note that the curly hair is on mammy and not that she has it as in English. Position is a very important feature in Irish.

Irish: Tá Ciarán ina dheartháir ar Aoife.
English: Ciarán is Aoife’s brother. Alternatively - Ciarán is the brother of Aoife.
Notes: Deartháir means brother in this sentence and is aspirated because it’s preceeded by the masculine possessive a. Aspirated means that it is softened, shown by the h. E.g. Deartháir – Dheartháir.

Irish: Tá Aoife ina deirfiúr ar Chiarán.
English: Aoife is Ciarán’s sister.
Notes: Deirfiúr means sister in this sentence and is not aspirated (softened) because it is preceeded by the feminine possessive a.

Irish: Tá Mamó ag teacht don chóisir.
English: Granny is coming to the party.
Notes: Mamó is an affectionate term for grandmother rather like granny or nana in English.

Irish: Tá Daideo ag teacht chomh maith.
English: Grandad is coming too.
Notes: Daideo is an affectionate term for grandfather rather like grandad or granda in English.

Irish: Beidh Aintín Nóra ag cabhrú le Mamaí.
English: Aunty Nora will be helping Mammy.
Notes: This and the other examples demonstrate the terms in a context.

Irish: Beidh Uncail Seán ag cabhrú le Daidí.
English: Uncle Seán will be helping Daddy.
Notes: The terms Uncail and Aintín are modernisms and substitute for the older more specific terms such as: deartháir athar or deartháir máthar etc (father’s brother/mother’s brother).
