| Irish: |
An bhfuil sé ag cur báistí?
Tá sé.
An bhfuil sé ag cur sneachta?
Níl sé. |
| English: |
Is it raining?
Yes.
Is it snowing?
No.
|
| Notes: |
There is no word in Irish for yes or no. Irish is like Latin in this respect. To answer yes or no one repeats the verb or indeed the whole sentence as a positive or a negative as above.
Tá and Níl mean it is or it is not. Not yes or no. |

Ní hea |
| English: |
No,no,no! It is not. |
| Notes: |
Ní hea literally means “it is not” It is used idiomatically in Irish in what is known as a corrective. If one wants to stop someone doing something immediately one would say to them “Ní hea!” The tone of voice would tell how urgently it is meant. It is the opposite of “is ea” which is a reinforcer. One would would say “ní hea” to stop the incorrect action and then say “is ea” to approve when the correct action starts.
